The journey so far: from a data science desk to a company

Ontology Analytics was registered in 2021 as a vehicle for one person's contracting. Axiom Data is what it became once we stopped treating it that way.

Companies rarely begin with a founding vision. Ours began with an ABN. Ontology Analytics Pty Ltd was registered in Canberra in September 2021 for the most ordinary reason a company gets registered in this town: a data scientist needed a vehicle to contract through. The name reflected the work of the day, ontologies and knowledge graphs for government data, and for its first couple of years that is all it was.

The moment the plan changed

Somewhere in the middle of a long engagement inside a large Commonwealth department, two things became obvious. The first was that the gap between the advice agencies were buying and what they could actually execute was enormous, and it was costing them time, money and momentum. The second was that the capability to close that gap did not live in the big firms. It lived in a scattered group of senior practitioners, most of them contractors, most of them cleared, most of them Canberra-based, who had each spent years building the systems the strategies described.

If you could bring those people together under one roof, with a shared standard for how work is done and a track record you could point to, you would have something agencies badly needed and could not buy from a brand-name consultancy. That was the idea. It needed a name that was not "Ontology Analytics".

Axiom Data

We registered the Axiom Data business name in September 2024. An axiom is a statement taken to be true without proof, and we liked the tension in that: our whole pitch is that advice should come with proof. The rest of that year went into the unglamorous foundations. We became an approved supplier on the Australian Government's Digital Marketplace for ICT Labour Hire, we built the website, and we started the product work that would become our gallery.

What we have learned about ourselves

A year in, a few things have become clear about what kind of company this is.

  • We are practitioner-led and we intend to stay that way. Every person who represents Axiom Data in a client meeting has built something that is in production.
  • We are a Canberra company. Most of our work is for Commonwealth agencies, most of our people hold clearances, and the three-months-on-site requirement in an RFQ is not an obstacle for us; it is where we live.
  • We are small and we are comfortable with it. Being small means the Director answers the phone, the person who wrote the proposal delivers the work, and there is no account manager between a client and the people doing the job.
  • We build our own tools. Where an off-the-shelf product did not do what we needed, we wrote our own, because building them is how we stay sharp and because we would rather own the things our business depends on.

What comes next

The next year is about proving the model at scale: more placements, more products in the gallery that have graduated from proof of concept to something people pay for, and a partner network of specialist firms who share our standards. We will write about all of it here, including the parts that do not go to plan.
